The main draw of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships got under way on Sunday with a high-quality day of tennis at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponça. Nuno Borges, Yannick Hanfmann and Lorenzo Sonego were the first players to secure their places in the last 16, while attention is already turning to Nick Kyrgios’s debut on Monday, one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the week.
Portugal’s Nuno Borges was tasked with opening the main draw and did so in commanding fashion. He defeated eighth seed Adrian Mannarino of France 6–2, 6–2, delivering a highly solid performance from the baseline. Borges broke serve in the opening game and never relinquished control of the contest. Having been eliminated in the first round on his only previous appearance in Mallorca, the Portuguese player records his first victory at the tournament and will face the winner of the match between Martín Landaluce and Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 16.
The clash between Mariano Navone and Lorenzo Sonego proved a much closer affair. The Italian edged a hard-fought first set in a tie-break, and although the Argentine responded strongly to level the match with a convincing 6–2 second set, Sonego once again drew on his experience at the crucial moments to seal a 7–6, 2–6, 6–4 victory. He will now face the winner of the match between Miomir Kecmanović and Hamad Medjedović in the last 16.
The day’s main draw action concluded with a win for Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann over Paraguay’s Álvaro Guillén Vallejo. The match was decided by two closely contested tie-breaks, with Hanfmann prevailing 7–6, 7–6. The German will face top seed Luciano Darderi of Italy in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, on the adjacent courts, the qualifying competition was completed. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Džumhur eliminated top seed Zachary Svajda 6–3, 6–3. Alex Molčan, Adam Walton and Marc Polmans also secured their places, filling the remaining spots in the main draw.
Attention now turns to Monday’s play, one of the most exciting days of the week. Centre Court action begins at 12.30pm with Corentin Moutet facing Márton Fucsovics. The Frenchman returns to a tournament that holds fond memories after reaching last year’s final. Not before 3.00pm, Martín Landaluce will take on Jan-Lennard Struff in a match with a Spanish flavour. The Madrid native makes his tournament debut against an opponent well accustomed to competing in Santa Ponça.
The day concludes with one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the week. Nick Kyrgios, competing on a wild card, will make his debut not before 5.30pm against fellow Australian Adam Walton, one of the players to come through qualifying. Kyrgios returns to Mallorca three years after his last appearance and stands out as one of the main attractions of a tournament that is beginning to take shape.
