Nuno Borges became the first Portuguese player to earn a win at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships on Sunday, when he swept past eighth seed Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-2.
It is the second time Borges has defeated a Top 50 player on grass, having overcome 2026 Queen’s Club champion Francisco Cerundolo in the first round at Wimbledon last year. Mannarino was competing in Mallorca for the third time, having reached the title match in 2023.
Borges, who also earned a grass-court victory in ‘s-Hertogenbosch earlier in June, will meet Spaniard Martin Landaluce or German wild card Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round at the ATP 250 grass-court event.
Lorenzo Sonego also advanced on Sunday, defeating seventh seed Mariano Navone 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4. The Italian lifted a tour-level trophy on grass in Antalya in 2021, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Sonego plays Miomir Kecmanovic or Hamad Medjedovic in the second round in Mallorca.
