The Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group delivered one of its most memorable moments this Sunday with the visit of Rudy Fernández, double world champion, triple Olympic medalist with the Spanish national basketball team, and former NBA player.
The Mallorca native engaged in a unique encounter with tournament top seed Ben Shelton, where both took on the role of ambassadors for their respective sports. First, on the pristine grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club, Rudy showcased surprising confidence and ease with a tennis racquet, trading rallies with Shelton in a series of entertaining points.
Then came the time for the American to switch gears and demonstrate his basketball skills. In front of an enthusiastic crowd gathered to witness the crossover challenge, Shelton impressed everyone by draining multiple three-pointers with ease—and even finishing off a spectacular alley-oop delivered by Rudy himself.
Beyond the entertainment, Sunday also marked the conclusion of the tournament’s qualifying rounds, where Team USA once again stood out, adding three more players to the main draw, for a total of six American players—more than any other nation.
On Grandstand Court, Brandon Holt opened the day with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Sweden’s Elias Ymer, sealing his spot in the main draw in just over ninety minutes. He was followed by Nishesh Basavareddy, who cruised past Argentina’s Mariano Navone with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 scoreline. The American hat trick was completed by Ethan Quinn, who staged a comeback to defeat Czech Vit Kopriva 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5) in a thrilling battle.
The only American to fall short was Aleksandar Kovacevic, who lost 7-6(2), 6-3 to the experienced Australian Bernard Tomic.
With the main draw now finalized and the tournament’s marquee names settling into Santa Ponça, the Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group is set to enter its most exciting phase.
