The Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group opened its main draw on Sunday with a lively day of tennis, family activities, and packed stands at the Mallorca Country Club.
In the most anticipated match of the day, No. 8 seed Daniel Altmaier overcame Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in a tightly contested three-set battle, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The German delighted the crowd with his aggressive grass-court game, frequently attacking the net en route to a spot in the second round.
Earlier in the day, Laslo Djere of Serbia got the singles action underway with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory over China’s Yunchaokete Bu, controlling the match with his consistency from the baseline.
In doubles, Spanish wild cards Jaume Munar and Pedro Martínez kicked off their campaign in dominant fashion, cruising past German pair Justin Engel and Andreas Mies 6-4, 6-1.
Family Day draws a full house
Sunday also featured the tournament’s traditional Family Day, a popular event that brought local families and visiting fans in large numbers. With free entry for children under 12, the Fan Zone was alive throughout the day with games, athletic challenges, special guest appearances by ATP players, and plenty of fun with the tournament’s official mascot, Champi.
What’s coming on Monday
Monday will see the debut of two of the three Spanish players in the main draw. Pedro Martínez opens Centre Court play at 13:00 against the talented and unpredictable Corentin Moutet. Not before 15:30, home favorite Jaume Munar takes on sixth seed Gabriel Diallo, fresh off his title run at the ATP 250 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The evening session will feature two of the tour’s most promising young stars: Germany’s Justin Engel and American Learner Tien.
