Lucky loser Abdullah Shelbayh earned his first tour-level win since 2023 on Monday at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships, where he upset sixth seed Corentin Moutet 7-5, 6-4 to reach the second round.
The 22-year-old, who competed at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2023, was playing in his first tour-level match of the season but did not let the occasion get to him, demonstrating great touch and feel in big moments to inflict defeat on Moutet.
“I didn’t have the most ideal preparation, especially after my loss yesterday I was kind of out of it,” Shelbayh said. “I had this opportunity and had nothing to lose. I told Corentin yesterday when I didn’t know I was in the tournament that I would love to play him and we both laughed about it and today to win, I am pretty fortunate. I will enjoy the moment.”
The Jordanian is up 40 spots to No. 259 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings following his fourth tour-level victory and will next play wild card Grigor Dimitrov or Australian qualifier Marc Polmans, who beat Shelbayh in qualifying. Shelbayh is used to playing in Mallorca, having trained on the island at the Rafa Nadal Academy since he was 14. The Academy is about 40 miles from where the ATP 250 grass-court event is played.
In other action, Jan-Lennard Struff earned his first win at the event when he battled past #NextGenATP Spaniard Martin Landaluce 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 to reach the second round.
Struff sealed victory on his fourth match point after one hour and 55 minutes and will next face Nuno Borges. Landaluce, a quarter-finalist at ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Rome this year, was chasing his first tour-level win on Spanish soil.
"I think he is a very good player. I saw him two years ago and he has already been very good," Struff said when asked about Landaluce. "He is having a great season. A young player with a lot of potential for the future."
American Ethan Quinn downed Valentin Royer 6-4, 6-3 to record his second grass-court win of the season after winning a match in Halle last week. The 22-year-old will face lucky loser Murphy Cassone in the second round.
Fabian Marozsan also advanced, defeating Alex Molcan 2-6, 7-6(10), 7-6(5). The Hungarian saved three match points in the second set, according to the Infosys ATP Stats. Australian qualifier Adam Walton moved past wild card Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-4 and will play second seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round.
