It was a tough start for Spanish players at the Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group, as both Jaume Munar and Pedro Martínez were eliminated in the opening round of the main draw.

Local favourite Jaume Munar was once again denied a home victory, falling to No. 6 seed Gabriel Diallo 7-5, 6-3 in a high-quality encounter filled with long rallies and aggressive shot-making.

Both players held serve consistently through much of the first set, but it was the in-form Canadian who secured a crucial break in the eleventh game and closed out the set on serve. In the second, Munar remained solid from the baseline, yet Diallo capitalised on a rare opening in the seventh game to seal the win in straight sets.

Diallo, 23, continues to make headlines in his breakthrough season. The World No. 41 leads the ATP Tour in grass-court wins this year after claiming his maiden title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and reaching the second round at Queen’s. The Canadian now holds a 2-0 record against Munar, whom he also defeated at last year’s US Open.

For Munar, this was his fourth main draw appearance in Mallorca and his fourth consecutive first-round exit.

Earlier on Centre Court, Pedro Martínez made a strong start against Frenchman Corentin Moutet, taking the first set 6-4. But an early injury to his left knee at the beginning of the second set changed the momentum completely. Struggling physically, the Spaniard was unable to keep pace as Moutet took control, closing out the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Now, Roberto Bautista Agut remains the only Spaniard left in the singles draw. The 2022 finalist is set to make his tournament debut on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. on Centre Court against Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry.
