The battle for the title is gathering momentum at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships. Ignacio Buse’s impressive victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov’s composed opening performance and Luciano Darderi’s confirmation as one of the leading contenders headlined a compelling day of action at the Mallorca Country Club. Attention now shifts to the eagerly anticipated debut of Málaga’s Alejandro Davidovich against Australia’s Adam Walton, one of Wednesday’s standout matches.
Buse was undoubtedly one of the stories of the day. Roared on by a passionate travelling support, the Peruvian produced a superb display to defeat Tsitsipas 7-6(4), 6-3, claiming just his second career win on grass. The 2022 champion bows out, while Buse continues to justify the growing hype around him as one of the season’s breakout performers.
The Peruvian will open Wednesday’s schedule on Centre Court at 12:30pm against Czech Vit Kopriva, who defeated Damir Dzumhur in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Grigor Dimitrov also advanced, launching his campaign in Santa Ponça with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Marc Polmans. In doing so, the Bulgarian secured his 50th ATP Tour win on grass, further cementing his reputation as one of the leading active players on the surface.
He will face Jordan’s Abdullah Shelbayh in Wednesday’s round of 16, following the young qualifier’s impressive win over Corentin Moutet. Their match is scheduled last on Centre Court, not before 5:30pm.
Luciano Darderi rounded off the day with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann. The top seed saved 13 break points en route to victory and, in the process, reached the quarter-finals of an ATP grass-court event for the first time in his career. He will meet Portugal’s Nuno Borges on Thursday, after the latter saw off Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 7-5.
The first quarter-final line-up is also set. Fabian Marozsan defeated defending champion Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-3, while Miomir Kecmanovic battled back to overcome Lorenzo Sonego 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. The pair will meet again later this week, having already traded wins in recent encounters in Halle and at Roland Garros.
One of the day’s most anticipated matches is slated for 3:00pm, as Alejandro Davidovich opens his campaign against Adam Walton, who previously knocked Nick Kyrgios out of the tournament. The Málaga-born Spaniard will be targeting his first win at the Mallorca Country Club, having lost on his only previous appearance in 2023, as he looks to take another step towards a maiden ATP Tour title.
