Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will always hold a special place in his heart for the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships. He has won his first ATP title at home, in front of his fans, on a day that will be etched in his memory after defeating Ethan Quinn 7-6(4), 6-3. He hadn't achieved this feat before, not in Monte Carlo, Delray Beach, Acapulco, Washington, or Basel. But here, at the Mallorca Country Club in Calvià, before a completely devoted crowd that filled the stands and cheered him on with Spanish flags throughout the final.
Davidovich has done it. The man from Malaga also becomes the third Spaniard to lift an ATP trophy this season, after Carlos Alcaraz and Álvaro Jodar, and joins the select list of Spanish grass-court champions alongside Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Feliciano López, David Ferrer, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Andrés Gimeno. He also makes history by becoming the first Spaniard to win the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships.
With the score at 2-1 in the first set, Davidovich had to save two consecutive break points, the first with an ace. Up to that point, Quinn had been much more solid on his return, while the Spaniard had yet to win a single return point. He gradually found his rhythm and, at 4-4, earned his first deuce on Quinn's serve. In that same game, he also had his first break point, which he converted thanks to a double fault by the American at the worst possible moment.
At 5-4 and serving for the set, Quinn rallied and earned three break points. Davidovich saved the first, but the American eventually leveled the score at 5-5. Neither player lost their serve again, and the match went to a tiebreak. There, Quinn secured the first mini-break, but Davidovich responded immediately with a brilliant backhand passing shot to level the tiebreak. From that moment on, he strung together his best shots, regained the initiative, and closed out the first set 7-4 with a powerful serve, a winning forehand, and a volley at the net.
In the second set, both players started by holding serve. Davidovich opened the set with his serve, and Quinn had to save a break point in the following game to prevent the Spaniard from extending his lead. Until 3-2, neither player conceded any further opportunities, and the match remained close. It was then that the decisive blow arrived. Davidovich went down 0-40 on his opponent's serve and, after squandering his first two break point opportunities, capitalized on his third to break the American's serve and go up 4-2. From then on, he managed the advantage with authority, maintained his solid serve, and closed out the match 6-3 to capture the first ATP title of his career.
Road to the title
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the title after a flawless run on the grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club. In the semifinals, he again demonstrated his mental fortitude by coming back to defeat Hungary's Fabián Marozsán 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, before capping off a perfect week by lifting the first ATP title of his career.
