The morning session at the Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group delivered a superb mix of drama, quality and storylines as the grass court action continued under the Mediterranean sun at the Mallorca Country Club. With the afternoon matches still to come, the tournament is already serving up another memorable day of tennis.
Australian Bernard Tomic opened the day with a hard-fought win over countryman Rinky Hijikata, coming from behind to seal a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory. It marked the former world No.17’s first ATP main draw appearance since 2021 and his first win on grass since reaching the quarterfinals in Antalya back in 2019. The veteran’s reward is a second-round encounter with the last remaining Spaniard in the draw, seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
Bautista Agut thrilled the local fans with a comeback victory of his own, overcoming Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a demanding battle lasting over two and a half hours. The 2022 finalist used his grass-court experience to full effect, navigating a seesaw contest to keep Spanish hopes alive heading into the latter stages of the tournament.
American qualifier Brandon Holt continued his Mallorcan dream run by ousting Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. After coming through the qualifying rounds, Holt is now into the round of 16 where he will face compatriot and third seed Alex Michelsen in an all-American clash.
Meanwhile, Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic became the first player to secure a place in the quarterfinals. The 21-year-old edged out Roman Safiullin 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) in a high-intensity match on the Grandstand, marking his first appearance in the last eight of an ATP tournament on grass.
With more matches still to be played this afternoon, including several seeded contenders taking the court, Tuesday at the Mallorca Championships is shaping up to be one of the most compelling days yet.
