Roberto Bautista delivered another rock-solid performance on the grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club to reach the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Championships presented by ecotrans Group for the fourth time. The Spaniard comfortably defeated Australia’s Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3 in Wednesday’s featured match.

Bautista looked sharp from the opening game, breaking Tomic in his first service game to take control of the opening set, which he closed out with confidence. The second set followed a similar pattern: an early break and dominant baseline play featuring his trademark consistency and precision.

“Fortunately, today’s match was a bit quicker than yesterday’s. I felt in control the whole time. From the baseline, I was the one dictating play and I served well. Winning in two sets allows me to feel better going into tomorrow,” Bautista said after the match.

The next hurdle for the Castellón native will be rising American star Alex Michelsen, the No. 3 seed, who booked his place in the last eight with a win over Brandon Holt. Michelsen, enjoying a strong grass-court swing, spoke highly of the challenge of facing Bautista:

“He’s a great player. He’s been on tour for a long time and knows exactly what he’s doing. He made the semifinals last week in Queen’s, so I’m sure he’s coming in with confidence. Plus, playing at home, I’m sure he’ll have a lot of crowd support.”

Bautista, who has never faced nor trained with the young American, remained cautious in his preview of the matchup:

“I’ve never played or practiced with him. I don’t know him well, but he’s a young player who’s been doing well. I’ll need to play at a high level if I want to reach the semifinals.”

With today’s win, Bautista now owns eight victories at the Mallorcan event, making him the most successful player in the tournament’s history. He also continues to build on his impressive grass-court résumé, having now amassed 54 ATP wins on the surface in his career.
