Alejandro Davidovich Fokina moved a step closer to history at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships on Thursday, when he kept alive his bid to become the first home-grown champion at the ATP 250 event.
The 27-year-old Spaniard produced a polished performance to defeat Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-3 and book his spot in the semi-finals. After the pair traded breaks in the opening two games, Davidovich Fokina quickly found his rhythm and never looked back, cruising to his 13th ATP Tour semi-final — and his first on Spanish soil — in just 73 minutes.
“I knew that Grigor was a very tough opponent,” Davidovich Fokina said. “He slices very well with his backhand, so it’s not easy to take the ball lower than your knees. It was not easy in the beginning, but the balls were getting bigger during the match, so I knew I would have my opportunity to attack more.”
With victories over Marc Polmans and Abdullah Shelbayh in Mallorca, Dimitrov doubled his tour-level win total for 2026 to four. The former World No. 3, currently No. 164 in the PIF ATP Rankings, now turns his attention to Wimbledon, where he has been awarded a main-draw wild card.
Davidovich Fokina will next meet Fabian Marozsan. The Hungarian defeated Miomir Kecmanovic for the second time in as many weeks, earning a 6-4, 6-3 win just nine days after their first-round clash in Halle.
In the top half of the Mallorca draw, Borges upset top seed Luciano Darderi 7-6(1), 6-4 to reach his third ATP Tour semi-final, and first on grass. The Portuguese star saved all four break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to his second Top 20 win of the season.
“I was trying to find some good returns,” Borges explained. “He was serving really well at the start, and then I had a few chances. I actually didn’t play too well in those important moments, but I managed to stay on serve, which is very important here. Then I had to wait for my opportunity. It only came at the end… I’m just really happy to come through.”
Borges set a semi-final showdown with Ethan Quinn, who earlier rallied past Vit Kopriva 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 to reach his first ATP Tour semi-final. The 22-year-old American dropped five consecutive games from 5-2 in the first set before regrouping for an ultimately composed two-hour, seven-minute win.
